Heavy rain action guide

What to Do When Your Driveway Drain Is Overflowing

A blocked driveway channel can turn into a garage flooding risk quickly. Here is what to check, what to avoid, and when to request help.

First, keep it safe

Do not stand in fast-moving water, open covers in unsafe conditions, or work near electrical equipment. If water is entering a house, garage, or electrical area, treat it as urgent.

Quick checks if it is safe

  1. Take photos of the water level and where it is flowing.
  2. Clear loose leaves from the top of the grate or channel.
  3. Check whether nearby catchpits are also full or overflowing.
  4. Note whether the issue is new or happens every heavy rain.

What causes driveway drains to overflow?

Surface debris is common, but the outlet pipe, downstream catchpit, or soakage system can also be blocked by silt, roots, or collapsed pipe. If the top of the grate is clear and water still sits there, the blockage is probably deeper.
